Rare authentic Korean War Lord Horse Saddle, Choson Dynasty (17th-18th century). Details: A wooden frame cantle extending over to the rear and projecting to the frontal high arch covered overall in shagreen (sharkskin) and is fitted with elaborate iron mounts decorated in fine silver inlay with a silver damascene repeated pattern of bats and good luck symbols.
CONDITION: A sign of usage and wear, the sharkskin is partly missing.
REFERENCES: An almost identical Korean saddle to this one, but in very poor condition with completely worn out silver and absence of fabric, is published in the Sotheby's catalogue for the Korean Works of Art Sale New York September 17, 1996 priced $2000-3000 (This price is from 12 years ago) with the note "In the Choson Dynasty, the materials allowed in the making of saddles was distinguished by rank. Sharkskin was reserved for the high rank officials, with antlers for the lower ranking officials". Color photocopies of the pages from the catalogue will be provided along with the certificate of authenticity.

Rare Authentic Antique Korean War Lord Horse Saddle, Chosen Dynasty, 17th-18th century. Details: A wooden frame cantle extending over to the rear and projecting to the frontal high arch covered overall in shagreen (sharkskin) and is fitted with elaborate iron mounts depicting on the front an image of a vase with flowers inlaid in fine silver. This motif is characteristic for 17th century Korean art and frequently used on 17th century Chosen Dynasty ceramic. The other mounts are inlayed with a silver damascene repeated pattern of bats and good luck symbols. Condition: In good condition with signs of usage and wear with its original top fabric and upholstery. An almost identical Korean saddle to this one, but in very poor condition with completely worn out silver and absence of fabric, is published in the Sotheby's catalogue for the Korean Works of Art Sale New York September 17, 1996 priced $2000-3000 (This price is from 12 years ago) with the note "In the Choson Dynasty, the materials allowed in the making of saddles was distinguished by rank.
