Islamic Arts from Spain

Изображение
Intricate, elaborate, and colorful, Islamic art produced in medieval Spain has had a lasting influence on Western decorative art. This fascinating book, lavishly illustrated with objects drawn from the V&A’s collections, includes exquisite ivory caskets, including stunning Byzantine works, marble tombstones and capitals, architectural models, jewelry, textiles, ceramics, and also examines the late 19th-century craze for the "Alhambresque" style promoted by English designer Owen Jones, the work of Antoni Gaudi, and much more.

Islamic Arts from Spain addresses the creation, suppression, rediscovery, and influence of Islamic art in Spain from the 8th to the 20th century . It looks first at patronage during the "Golden Age" of the Umayyad caliphate, from the mid-10th to the early 11th century, before discussing the Nasrid dynasty, who ruled from Granada while Christian monarchs were reemerging in northern Spain. The book also explores the phenomenon of the "Mudéjar," Islamic-influenced arts produced under non-Muslim patrons in the Renaissance.
About the Author
Mariam Rosser-Owen is a curator in the V&A’s Middle Eastern Department. She has published extensively on ivories from the medieval Mediterranean, and contributed to Palace and Mosque: Islamic Art from the Middle East. She co-edited the volume Revisiting Al-Andalus: Perspectives on the Material Culture of Islamic Iberia and Beyond.

The Treasures of Islamic Art in the Museums of Cairo

Изображение
Cairo's museums are home to some of the richest collection of Islamic art in the world. Long the seat of great dynasties, whose rulers and descendants both amassed and patronized works of art, Cairo's status as one of the wealthiest and most populous cities of the medieval world is reflected in the exquisite arts and crafts that make up its collections, which expanded in the twentieth century through the purchase of private collections so that they now include not just the arts of the dynasties that made Cairo their capital, such as the Fatimids, Ayyubids, and Mamluks, but material from other important areas of the Islamic world, such as Iran and Turkey, as well. Masterpieces of every medium are represented, including the decorative arts of ceramics, metalwork, textile, woodwork, glass, carved stone and ivory, and the art of the book. The objects vary from pieces made for purely secular purposes, many of them with blazons showing that they were the property of the great amirs of the time, to some of the choicest examples recovered from the architectural masterpieces that permeate Cairo's landscape. An introductory chapter guides the reader into the world of Islam and its art, while subsequent chapters unfold and describe the riches of the works of art that were crafted and amassed throughout the ages. The book is lavishly illustrated throughout with specially commissioned color photographs. Contributors to this volume include Mohamed Abbas, Noha Abou-Khatwa, Farouk Askar, Mohamed Hamza, and Bernard O Kane.
About the Author
BERNARD O KANE is professor of Islamic art and architecture at the American University in Cairo. He is the author of Studies in Persian Art and Architecture (AUC Press, 1995) and Early Persian Painting: Kalila and Dimna Manuscripts of the Late 14th Century (AUC Press, 2003).

Light of the Sufis: The Mystical Arts of Islam (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)

Изображение
Light of the Sufis introduces the complex and multilayered topic of Sufism, or Islamic mysticism, by concentrating on its expression in the visual arts and offers new insights into the integrative and fluid nature of the Sufi experience that has solicited strong reactions—both negative and positive—in Muslims and non-Muslims alike for several hundred years.

Sufism became well established in the 9th to 10th century and reached its height in the 12th to 13th century. From its inception, Sufism recognized the traditions and practices of other faiths and cultures with which it came into contact, adapting and incorporating elements of Greek philosophies, Christian mysticism, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism, and Buddhism. This diversity has been reflected not only in the words and the lives of celebrated Sufi mystics but also in some of the finest literature, music, performance, and visual arts produced in the Islamic world. Lavishly illustrated, this exhibition catalogue presents exceptional works in various media from diverse areas of the Islamic world, including North Africa, Turkey, Iran, and India, and dating from the ninth century to the present.

Изображение
Part of the al-Sabah Islamic art collection at the Kuwait National Museum, the hundreds of pieces in Glass from Islamic Lands date from the sixth to the 19th century, originated primarily in the Middle East and Asia and had been exported all over the world before the al-Sabah family assembled them. Glass of the Sultans (Metropolitan Museum of Art Series)

Изображение
Islamic glassmakers were not only brilliant technicians and innovators in their own right, but they also preserved many of the methods of Late Antique Roman craftsmen, passing them on centuries later to Venetian and other European masters. This lovely book is the first comprehensive study of the accomplishments of these artisans. The volume presents glass objects from collections throughout the world - from perfume flasks to pitchers, mosque lanterns to boxes, inkwells to vases - ranging from the seventh to the nineteenth century and through many of the major artistic centres of the Muslim world. Five introductory essays cover all facets of the subject, including historical background, archacological excavations, issues of connoisseurship, technology and science. The authors then discuss 150 masterworks of Islamic glass, grouped by technique or type of decoration (blown, mould-blown, hot-worked, mosaic, painted, cut, and engraved) each of which is illustrated in full colour. Examples of European glass objects are also included as illuminating reference points. The book is the catalogue of an exhibition that opens at the Corning Museum of Glass in May 2001 and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in October 2001.

Arts of the City Victorious: Islamic Art and Architecture in Fatimid North Africa and Egypt

Изображение
This is the first book-length study of the art and architecture of the Fatimids, the Ismaili Shi'i dynasty that ruled in North Africa and Egypt from 909 to 1171. The Fatimids are most famous for founding the city of al-Qahira (Cairo) in 969, and their art—particularly textiles and luster ceramics, but also metalwork and carved rock-crystal, ivory and woodwork—has been admired for nearly a millennium. In this engaging and accessible book, Jonathan M. Bloom concentrates on securely dated and localized examples of Fatimid art and architecture. His discussions focus on significant examples and are illustrated with over 100 photographs, many in color, and extensive notes and bibliography provide guidance for further reading and research.

Persian Ceramics: 9th - 14th Century

Изображение
In the complex and varied world of Islamic art ceramics play an important role. Medieval Persian ceramics, in particular, were extraordinary for their technical invention and imaginative, refined iconography achieving artistic results that would be difficult to surpass in the art of pottery. Compared with early Islamic art, works of art from medieval times make much greater use of figural decoration and forms. Alongside celebrated examples from some of the world's most prestigious museum collections, this volume includes a series of hitherto unseen works. The impressive and technically sophisticated pieces include plates, bowls, ewers, jugs, jars, beakers, and spouted and shaped vessels. The book provides an exhaustive panorama of Persian ceramics, striking a perfect balance between technical, stylistic, and aesthetic analysis, which brings the reader closer to this art of exceptional quality and beauty.

Ceramics from Islamic Lands

Изображение
"This splendid catalog serves as the most current and magnificently illustrated introduction to Islamic ceramics now available. Essential."—Choice

Islamic pottery—the fine ceramics made in the lands of Islam, from the Arab world and Turkey through Iran and into Central Asia—is one of the hidden treasures of world ceramics. It has often been overshadowed by the ceramic legacy of China and Europe, yet it cedes nothing to these great traditions in technical inventiveness and beauty of design. Through close trading links and cultural interchange, Islamic potters have played a crucial role in the development of these other ceramic cultures.

A catalogue of the al-Sabah collection in Kuwait—one of the few truly great collections in private hands—this richly illustrated volume presents a comprehensive history of ceramics from Islamic lands and portrays the unfolding story of Islamic pottery over its thousand-year history.

Over four hundred pieces are described, providing both an examination of individual items and an overall history of the subject. Clear and informative introductory essays cover the study and collecting of Islamic pottery over the past hundred years, and trace its technical and chronological history, from the first fine wares made in the eighth century to the destructive impact of European industrialization in the nineteenth century. The individual objects, illustrated with some nine hundred color pictures, are grouped by type and geographically. A Choice Outstanding Academic Title. 921 color illustrations.

Perpetual Glory: Medieval Islamic Ceramics from the Harvey B. Plotnick Collection (Art Institute of Chicago)

Изображение
Renowned for their technical inventiveness, variety, and beauty, Islamic ceramics first began to flourish in the medieval period. This handsome book presents over one hundred works from the unparalleled Harvey B. Plotnick Collection and documents the extraordinary achievements in Islamic pottery from the 9th to 14th centuries.
Focusing on three of the most important types of ceramics produced in Iraq and Iran––lusterware, minai, and underglaze painted wares––the book includes fascinating information on each of the works and an introductory essay that discusses the exalted status that ceramics held in the medieval Islamic world, the developments of various techniques in ceramic production, and the singular importance of this major collection. It also tells the particular story of the development of lusterware from the era of the Abbasids (9th–10th centuries), to the court of the Fatimid rulers in Egypt, to its remarkable artistic expression in Iran in the late 12th century.

Ceramics of the Islamic World

Изображение
Ceramics from the Islamic world have been fully appreciated by western art historians and collectors, as well as the discerning public, since the early 20th century. Since then important finds have enhanced the role of ceramics as a valuable source in charting the evolution of Islamic artistic culture. In this monumental and magnificently illustrated book, Géza Fehérvári presents the history of ceramics in the Islamic world through a wide and comprehensive collection of objects spanning all periods and regions of the Islamic world.

Raqqa Revisited: Ceramics of Ayyubid Syria (Metropolitan Museum of Art Series)

Изображение
Raqqa, in Syria, had its first Islamic flowering in the late 8th century, when it was the residence of the legendary Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid. It experienced a resurgence during the late 12th and early 13th centuries under the Zangids and Ayyubids. Interest in the city was kindled in the West in the late 19th century, by, among other things, the publication of the Arabic literary classic The Thousand and One Nights, in which Harun al-Rashid was a central character. At the same time, ceramics purportedly connected to the legendary caliph were excavated in Raqqa. Speculation about the site and the objects unearthed there has abounded for more than a century.
In this important volume, Marilyn Jenkins-Madina describes the dramatic journey these ceramics took from discovery in Raqqa to the emporiums of Paris and New York, the drawing rooms of great collectors, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Using art historical detective work, archival documents, and scientific data, the author convincingly establishes provenance and dating, placing these beautiful wares in a clear historical context for the first time.
